Having read all the books included under The Avalon Investigations Series of Michele Albert's book list, would like to divide this selection into two different series; naming them: {1} The Pre-Avalon Series and {2} The Avalon Investigations Series.

Since there is something special about Michele Albert's writing style that appeals to the reader inside me, it should come as no surprise that Hide In Plain Sight, the fifth book in {1} The Pre-Avalon Series and {2} the first book in The Avalon Investigations Series, is another must read for me.   Although this book did not hold quite the same appeal as some of her previous works, it was still an exciting, intriguing, spicy, enjoyable read.

Hide In Plain Sight is just another example of how Albert is able to immediately draw her readers into her books and then hold them spellbound as she weaves a fascinating story about a hunky, alpha hero and a seemingly ordinary, yet apparently brave-hearted heroine.   If one were to write a headline that prefaced this book, it would be: "Legendary Super Agent is Felled by Bookworm During His Mid-Life Crisis."

As in her previous books, the romance aspect of this story carries more weight than the suspenseful nature of the plot.   The introduction of the super-villain, Rainert von Lahr, one of the most notorious art and antiquities thieves in all of Europe adds a new richer flavor of suspense to this book.   In the Prologue, Avalon Agent Griffith "Grif" Laughton is introduced trying to capture von Lahr, but instead is outwitted by this master criminal, who kills three of his team members.   This particular mission continues to haunt Grif five years later at the opening of this book.

Apparently Albert has decided to forego delving deep into the psyche of her characters to inspire an emotional connection to the hero and heroine and to try and write a story full of romance and suspense.   And while creating an aura of romance and suspense around the actions of Grif and Fiona in this book is instrumental in keeping one turning the pages, she did not create as deep an impact in either of these realms as, say, Karen Rose or Suzanne Brockmann.   The suspense was not intense and the romance was unique -- in that Albert took a close look at the true nature of the female psyche when it comes to 'one night stands.'

After her husband, Richard McMahon, has been declared legally dead after driving his car into a fast-running river five years ago, Fiona Kennedy-McMahon is sitting in her bookshop contemplating taking a holiday in the Bahamas because she understands that the scuba diver instructors were easy.   As the rainy day passes and Fiona makes her reservations for her vacation so she can move on with her life, two drop-dead gorgeous men visit Kennedy Antiquarian Books and flirt with her.   So Albert has begun building the suspense by introducing not only the hero to the heroine, but the villain as well.

Albert does a great job of keeping the suspenseful aspect of the story alive when Grif arrives at the bookshop to contract with Fiona to authenticate a fake manuscript by poet and playwright, Christopher "Kit" Marlowe.   Fiona was an expert on Marlowe and was supposed to be the only person who could reveal the coded messages within this manuscript that Richard had created regarding van Lahr's foremost forger and base of operations.   Grif teases Fiona with a short glimpse of the manuscript and then tells her he will return at closing to take her out to dinner.   Albert totally drops the ball with regard to the manuscript.   Instead of letting Fiona again look at the manuscript during their period of hiding, she focused solely on the volatile relationship between Grif and Fiona.

Albert did a great job of when it come to increasing the amount of action and adventure she included in this book, which seems only appropriate since she had phased into a new series featuring a group of mercenaries who are hired to protect stolen art and antiquities -- an aspect of law enforcement that is often overlooked because they must focus their limited resources on murders and other mayhem.   The secretive organization is called Avalon Investigations and the operatives get their orders from Ben Sheridan.

With just a few well-written scenes, in which Albert describes the offices of Sheridan Expeditions (Ben's actual wilderness expedition travel agency) and introduces readers to Ben and his equally fascinating secretary / bodyguard, Ellie.   To say that these two minor, but important secondary characters drew marked and immediate interest is an understatement.   Albert has done a remarkable job of wetting the appetite to inspire a desire to pick up any future books that may reveal more about Ben and the secret organization that he oversees.

Even though Grif was sent by Ben to protect Fiona as they used her as bait to lure the 'impossible to catch' villain from his lair with a fake Marlow manuscript, Hide In Plain Sight, is not so much about catching von Lahr as it is about the redemption of Grif and the re-emergence of Fiona back into life.   [Warning: most readers will not like the following interpretation regarding Fiona's reaction to Grif's revelation that he was not actually a lawyer, but a secret agent.]

Women are a fickle lot -- and Fiona is no exception.   She takes a gorgeous, handsome, charming man she just met back to her home to end her five years of abstinence.   Fiona even tells Grif:

"I want to be honest with you, Griffith.   I'm not looking for love or romance or commitment.   I'm just looking for a night of hot, sweaty, wonderful sex."   (Fiona, page 87)

Then when Fiona learns that's Griffith's entry into her life was false, she hauled off and hit him in the mouth, saying:

"You bastard.   All along you lied to me.   You used me!   (Fiona, page 148)

Fiona was so typically female.   She lied to herself, and was okay with using a man when it was her idea, but when she learned she had never been in control, she flew into a fury.   But, then, again, this also pointed out that Fiona was one of those women who could not do casual sex -- she let her emotions get all tangled up in the actions.

she wasn't the kind of woman who had sex with a total stranger.   (Fiona, page 72)

"How does it feel to use people?   Or do you just not care?   It must be so amusing, watching people make such fools of themselves.   What I might be thinking or feeling never mattered to you.   None of what happened meant anything to you, did it?"   (Fiona, page 171)

This book is peppered with hot, sensual, fiery, scenes in which Albert reveals her talent as a writer who knows how to pen powerful sex scenes.   She knows the words to use that inspire heat, interest and sizzle as readers enter into the world of Grif and Fiona as they each try to prove they are in control of what is happening between them.

Albert displays her skills at creating realistic characters by introducing the confusion and conflict within Fiona as she is forced to deal with them when Grif must take her to a safe house.   She is attracted to Grif.   She is furious with Grif.   She wants to hate him.   She wants to love him.   She wants to leave him.   She wants to stay with him.   But what she finally comes to realize after they spend time confronting one another in the safe house, was that she believed in Grif -- and then tells him so.

"I think you're wrong about people not believing in you." . . .   "I believe in you."   (Fiona, page 231)

"I'm not blind or stupid, Griffith -- though I've been pathologically naïve these last two days.   I don't exactly trust you, but I believe in you.   . . ."   (Fiona, page 232)

"Now all you have to do is believe in yourself.   If you want something more out of life, make it happen."   (Fiona, page 232)

This is where Albert fails to measure up when it comes to character development.   She has created this phenomenally charming, charismatic, super agent.   Yes, readers watch Grif as he begins to take note of his life choices as he spends time with Fiona in the safe house.   He obviously has a strong sense of right and wrong and wants to win (at all costs), but Albert failed to build his history.   Why had he failed to contact any of his family in ten years?   And why did not one of them even care?   There was such potential to expand Grif's character and create such a deep emotional connection that when he had his visit with Ben Sheridan in Seattle, the reader would be grabbing for Kleenex instead of just feeling sad.

"remember rule number one: Get the job done, no matter what.   It's the only rule people like us live by."   (Grif to fellow agent, Perry, page 12)

Sitting in the soft light of this bedroom, in front of her dresser mirror, he had a good look at himself and didn't like what he saw.   (Grif, page 86)

There was something about her that had him wondering what it would be like to have a life like this.   To have a place of his own, a place of peace and serenity, of warmth.   (Grif, page 94)

. . . even if it meant she was a sentimental idiot , she'd sensed the weary loneliness of someone who'd taken a good look at his life, didn't like what he saw, and didn't believe in himself enough to change.   (Fiona, page 296)

Probably the reason it was so easy to identify with Fiona was because she felt so ordinary.   Again, Albert failed to develop the emotional angst that Fiona must have experienced when she dealt with her husband's jealously, betrayal and death that led to a sandal that forced her to leave the world of academia.   In fact, this scandal was mentioned in passing as if it carried no weight in the world of Fiona.   Instead, Fiona just comes across as a quiet, little bookworm who is brave enough to take a handsome stranger home and then haul off and belt him because wasn't her prince charming after all.

Albert gave Rainert von Lahr a point of view voice in this book.   What was particularly surprising about the development of this arch-villain was the layers that Albert began to give to von Lahr.   Rainert had previously been painted with a brush filled with a solid color of cold-bloodedness.   Now, however, Albert begins painting other colors into his personality -- delving into the reasons for his actions and that he didn't so much kill for the joy of killing but because of {1} expediency, {2} the desire to prove his superiority, {3} to ensure his safety, and {4} to promote his lifestyle.

Hide In Plain Sight is an easy, enjoyable, entertaining read.   Albert kept one turning the pages, by providing the necessary facets that make for a great read. {1} Grif, a skilled super agent who was charming, suave, debonair, and was having to come to grips with his life choices. {2} Fiona, the proverbial 'girl next door' who was leaving her cocoon to offer solace and compassion to a man who betrayed her. {3} Bouts of action and adventure that added the much needed excitement into the plot. {4} A degree of suspense regarding Avalon Investigations, it's operatives, it's leader, and it's number one villain. {5} Although there was an emotional connection to Grif and Fiona, the intensity did not reach that special level that Albert usually provides to make her books so memorable. {6} The romance factor was prevalent as Grif and Fiona immediately gave in to their attraction . . . and then fought about the feelings that arose for the remainder of the book.   {7} The sensuality was, typically, hot and spicy. {8} The secondary characters, while minimally developed, added interest and inspired interest in future books.   Because Albert's writing style holds such a strong appeal for me, I am anxious to read the next book in the series.

Having read all the books included under The Avalon Investigations Series of Michele Albert's book list, would like to divide this selection into two different series; naming them: {1} The Pre-Avalon Series and {2} The Avalon Investigations Series.

Don't know if it is explainable, but for some reason the way Michele Albert writes a story appeals to me.   She just seems to make people feel real in her books.   It brings the characters alive and makes for an engrossing read.   And while One Way Out, the fourth book of The Pre-Avalon Series, was another enjoyable, intriguing read, it did not have the depth of character connection that came across in the previous books of this series.

Any true blue romance reader has to love the way Albert introduced her 'bold as brass' heroine, Cassie Parker Ashton, barging into the middle of her nemesis' archeological dig and, in spite of having a full-fledged hatred toward paleontologist professor Alex Martinelli, Ph.D., she is pure female in her appreciation of his body as she shouts for him to come down from the rock face and talk to her.

She'd noticed all right.   The leather straps and ropes nicely framed the best, and the most arrogant ass, in all Wyoming.   (Cassie, page 2)

As he descended, Cassie couldn't help focusing once more on how the harness cradled his rear and groin over the worn denim of his jeans, revealing a most impressive package, front and back.   (Cassie, page 4)

Albert is truly gifted when it comes to writing entertaining dialogue that makes turning the pages that much more interesting.   It was pure entertainment as Albert revealed that Cassie and Alex had been having an ongoing battle for years and that they had respective cheering sections.   Since Cassie was in Alex's territory, she was subjected to the editorial comments of his grad students, particularly the tall, blond, twenty-something Melissa that claimed Alex as hers.   But in spite of all the animosity, it was obvious Cassie "actually enjoyed these little sparring matches with Martinelli" (page 5).

Cassie had stumbled upon the find of a lifetime, a baby tyrannosaurus skeleton, but since she was not a member of the hallowed academic Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, she must cross all her I's and dot her T's to finally receive the respect she craves.   To do that Cassie must offer Alex the opportunity to work with her on unearthing, documenting and validating the baby t-rex.

Although the suspenseful aspect of Albert's books is generally light, she begins building up a sense of ill will by introducing Alex's second in command, the older, sand-encrusted professor, Don Cleary, as he sits and talks to Alex about the unfairness of them having to stand in the shadow of Cassie after she made another stellar find.   While Alex and Don have to go through academic red tape and follow the rules, Cassie is out there making finds that they envy.   Don is also utilized as a sounding board for Alex so Albert can begin painting a picture of the dissatisfaction that has become his life.   And then she finishes the canvas by having Melissa dump Alex, saying:

"There isn't anything you care about.   Not even your work, despite the big act you're always putting on.   And that's why you fight with that woman, isn't it?   So nobody will notice you're just going through the motions." (Melissa, page 61)

It seems everyone but Alex and Cassie can see the sparks that flew between them were full of attraction.   When Alex and Cassie fought, it was like they were the only two people alive.

"When you're with that Ashton woman, there's a huge arc of energy between you, so strong everybody notices.   So strong the two of you don't see or hear anything or anybody else."   (Don, page 64)

It was particularly disappointing that Albert failed to spend enough time in the mind of Alex to instill an emotional connection.   Sure she fed us facts about Alex's life as he began interacting with the bossy, spunky, bigger-than-life Cassie, but she failed to paint a picture of his psyche that made it easy to identify with his feelings and flow into the emotional aspect of the story.   But that was par for the course, because it was also difficult to identify on a sympathetic level with Cassie.   Whenever she bulldozed her way through the pages and then tried to explain her point of view after all the shouting had died down, it was easier to identify with the other characters rather than with Cassie.

Cassie had a larger cast of secondary characters upon which Albert built her personality.   Cassie fought with her mother, Ellen Parker, who faded into the background shortly after she rang up a sale at the Hell Creek Rock Shop or called Cassie to task for not being a more doting mother.   There was no in-depth development of the tense mother-daughter relationship beyond the fact that Ellen wanted Cassie to stop looking for rocks and to get re-married and have more children.

Fifteen year old, Travis Ashton, played a big role in Cassie's life, but not quite as big a role in her book.   It was obvious that Cassie loved her son, but she tended to overlook him in her efforts to prove herself as a viable, respectable paleontologist.   Travis was a cute addition to the story and loved the scene where he named the baby t-rex Trixie.   But the most revealing statement Travis made showed that maybe Cassie's priorities were skewed.

"Why do those stupid dinosaurs always have to be more important than anybody else?"   (Travis, page 215)

It is too bad that Albert did not take more time to develop the personality and mindset of Wyatt Parker, Cassie's younger, 'too much like her to get along with her' brother.   The raging arguments that happened between Cassie and Wyatt were prime examples of how close-minded Cassie appeared to be as she ran roughshod over anyone whose opinions differed from her own.   Wyatt only got to have one little point of view scene that made him memorable.   Wished that Albert had more fully developed Wyatt's personality and featured him a bit more in his sister's book.

Two more minor characters worked for the Hell Creek Fossil Company, but after they were described, they, too, almost disappeared into the background.   There was the colorful, funny, lab's computer tech, Amy Gupta, who was oblivious to Wyatt's interest in her.   Then there was the mousy little lab manager, Mae [not even given a last name] that had such a big crush on Wyatt that everybody noticed (and Wyatt didn't know how to deal with).   And finally, there was the new part-time helper, Russ Noble, who was an intriguing addition to the story as it was revealed there was far more underneath his demeanor that his laid-back personality revealed.

Having read the previous books of the series, it is obvious that suspense is not Albert's strong suit, but she did begin to build a plotting sequence that enabled Alex and Cassie to end up together without a bunch of family members or grad students to get in the way of their budding romance.   Alex and Cassie were able to entertain with a few exciting incidents of action and adventure as they found themselves in several precarious situations as they struggled to retain custody of the much-wanted baby t-rex.

The romance aspect of the story didn't flow smoothly.   As Alex and Cassie were forced into close proximity, they finally acted on the raging lust that had been sparking between them.   And while the love scenes between Alex and Cassie were hot and full of sensuality and sizzle, the emotional aspect that is a necessary component to a successful love scene was missing.   The way Albert ended their first love scene in the woods with such an abrupt, unfinished feeling, left me wondering, what was that all about?   Albert didn't very successfully pick the threads of romance back up as Alex and Cassie were wondering, so now what?

Albert failed to explain Cassie's background to such a degree that could not understand why being right and in control became so all-fired important to her.   And why she was unwilling to face the cold, honest truth about herself.   Albert kept stressing that Cassie used her bossy boldness to hide her feelings, but it was never clear why she felt that way.   Why was she so afraid of having a romantic relationship?   Was Alex right when he said that Cassie wanted a man who would push back when she pushed?

Albert even went to the trouble to write two specific scenes to shout out to the readers that Cassie had fallen in love with Alex.   First, Cassie was talking on the phone to Travis and let him know in no uncertain terms that she loved him more than the t-rex.

"When I find the people that took Trixie, I'm going to punish them to the full extent of the law.   But you know what?"
"What?"   His voice was low, sulky.
"If they'd taken you, I'd kill them."   (Cassie and Travis, page 217)

Then when Alex nearly got killed when he rushed to recuse Mae, Cassie came running up and in her usual 'bull in the china shop fashion' turned on Mae and spouted:

"You!   You're damn lucky he's not hurt, or you'd be drawing your last breath right now."   (Cassie, page 290)

But what it all boiled down to was that Cassie appeared to be a strong, determined, 'plow ahead against any obstacles' kind of woman, but, in the end, she was, basically, a cowardly run-away.

For Pete's Sake, why are these Michele Albert books listed as part of The Avalon Investigations Series?   One Way Out is the fourth book listed in this series and yet there is still no mention of the Avalon Investigation firm.   Why is the series named thus?   (Went to Michele Albert's website) and it states that Avalon was introduced in this book.   (Sorry, but I totally missed it!)   [Learned that Russ Noble's tie to Sheridan Expeditions is the Avalon connection.]

Having recently finished reading a trilogy in which the author wrote three good books but failed to finish them off with the kind of Epilogues that most appeal to me, it was wonderful to find that kind of Epilogue in this book.   Albert takes the readers back to visit the heros and heroines in her previous books when she reunites them for Jack and Diana's wedding.   But since it has been 20 months between reading book three and this book, I had to be disappointed because I couldn't remember all the pertinent details about Jack and Diana's (Getting Her Man), and Bobby and Emma's (Off Limits) stories.   It is for just this reason that I like to collect all the books of a series and read them back to back.

So, basically, even though Michele Albert has another enjoyable, entertaining read with One Way Out, this fourth book in The Pre-Avalon Series, it is not her best work.   {1} The hero was alpha and hunky, but his psyche was under-developed.   {2} The heroine was strong, bold, determined and multi-faceted, but she wimped out in the end.   {3} The dialogue was stellar until Alex and Cassie hooked up.   {4} The interaction between the characters added a sense of realism to the story.   {5} The sensuality in the love scenes was strong and potent.   {6} Although light on suspense and action, the plot was still entertaining.   Even though it is not Albert's best work, this book is still well worth reading.

Having read all the books included under The Avalon Investigations Series of Michele Albert's book list, would like to divide this selection into two different series; naming them: {1} The Pre-Avalon Series and {2} The Avalon Investigations Series.

Finally Detective Bobby Halloran's story!   Michele Albert introduced Bobby in the first book of The Pre-Avalon Series (Absolute Trouble (under pen name Michelle Jerott)).   Could not help but feel broken-hearted for Bobby because his ex-partner and ex-lover, Dulcie, chose Julien over him.   In the second book of the series (Getting Her Man), Diana is friends with Bobby and needs his connections to the New Orleans Police Department regarding her case.

In these first two books Albert stresses Bobby's golden good looks, his charming way with women, his joie de vivre, and his obvious love of dressing in loud, "notice me" clothing.   This cheerful, spunky hero has been replaced by a hung-over, "get off my case" grouch in the opening pages of this third book of the series, Off Limits.   It becomes apparent rather quickly that Bobby is suffering from job burnout.

Bobby's bad day gets worse for two reasons.   First, Captain Derrick Strong (is this a play on words -- a strong captain is needed to head up the First District Investigation Unit) reminds Bobby he is a cop, not a missionary.   Just another well-placed tidbit by Albert to let the readers know that Bobby wears his heart on his sleeve.   And, second, Captain Strong assigns Bobby to work with the new transfer, Detective Emma Frey, on a burglary case.   This wonderful quote says it all:

Earnest Emma had arrived in all her perfectionist glory to make him feel even more inadequate than he'd been feeling just five seconds ago."   (Bobby, page 2)

Albert can deliver so much information in such an entertaining, concise, well-written manner.   The way she develops her characters by making them so realistic with everyday, ordinary problems makes it easy to identify with them and become engrossed in the thread of the story.   It makes for a great read.

Emma is not a welcome addition to the New Orleans Investigation Unit.   She faces ridicule and is ostracized because she testified against several Hollywood officers.   The level of discomfort in New Orleans is still easier to deal with that the blatant hostility she received during the trials back in Los Angeles.   Not only must "follow the letter of the law" Emma strive to prove herself a worthy addition to the NOPD, she is paired with the "about to cross that invisible blue line" bad boy, Bobby Halloran.   It is easy to see the writing on this wall -- there is going to be some serious conflict between these two strong personalities.

Albert ties the books of this series together by re-introducing a character briefly glimpsed in Absolute Trouble, renowned party girl Chloe Mitsumi (the sister to book one's villain, Jacob Mitsumi).   Since Emma is out to prove her worth, she is not a happy camper that Bobby is so well acquainted with the mysteriously absent burglary victim, Chloe.

On the way to investigate the burglary at Chloe's apartment, Bobby takes a detour to the Iberville projects and viciously breaks the rules right in front of by-the-book Emma.   Interest and intrigue are intensified when Bobby throws drug dealing Raymond against the wall.   There have been several hints now that something has gone seriously wrong in Bobby's recent past, but all Emma sees is a policeman crossing the line.   After interviewing Chloe's landlord and boss, Bobby and Emma part company to pursue different avenues of the investigation.

Emma's doubts about Bobby take off like wildfire and become a three-alarm blaze when fellow officer Alycia Chatman reveals that a betting pool is going around the office about how long it will take Bobby to get in her pants.   Emma shores up her softening heart towards Bobby even as Alycia defends Bobby and speaks eloquently about the human-ness of cops.

"But we're only human.   We have bad days.   We get sick and still go to work.   Our boyfriends cheat on us, and we still stop a guy from smacking his girlfriend around.   Our kids drive us nuts, the dog next door keeps us up all night . . . and we still gotta deal with some pissant creep who just beat on a baby."   . . .   "Can you honestly tell me you've never said something you shouldn't have to an asshole you're arresting, or gotten a little too rough because, just for a second or two, you got so much disgust in you that you can't keep it back?"   (Alycia, page 45)

Emma, naturally, is no more immune to Bobby than any other red-blooded woman.   Loved the scene in the bar when Bobby first kissed Emma.   Emma and Bobby are trying to find Chloe and 'I will not get emotionally involved'-Emma can't keep her mind on the job as Bobby kisses her (to keep one of Jacob Mitsumi's henchmen from recognizing him).   Whew!   Such heat.   That is one thing that Albert excels at . . . putting the heat and magic in her love scenes.   The first time Bobby and Emma made love it was more about the release of tension than about emotional attachment (and in a very unique setting).

Since Off Limits is classified as a "Contemporary Romance" rather than a "Romantic Suspense," Bobby and Emma do not spend a lot of time in the police procedural kind of suspenseful pursuit trying to find the person who ransacked Chloe's apartment.   More questions arise when Jacob Mitsumi's henchman are starting to turn up dead.   Albert even does a great job with misdirection, but introducing the District Five detective who handled the Mitsumi case before it was given to Emma.   Gary Giacomo sends out really harsh messages to Emma during Carter and Alycia Chatman's annual backyard cut-throat game of basketball.

Off Limits concentrates on the thought processes and emotions Emma faces regarding Bobby as he falls into a downward spiral.   Emma's strong personality and sharp intuition paid off when it came to rescuing Bobby when he went into full-blown, "I'm going to do something stupid" anger when he learned about Juleen Moss being pulled off life support.   Because Bobby has a great big heart and tries to rescue the helpless, he became emotionally involved in Raymond and Juleen's domestic battering case.   Juleen's death is the straw that broke the camel's back.   Emma helps pull Bobby from the edge.

Albert added one other episode of interest to the book.   She handcuffed Chloe, the wild and free party girly-girl (and former lover to Bobby) to Emma, the straight-laced, rule-following, conservative-suit wearing girl (and current lover to Bobby).   There was some interesting interaction and bonding between two such highly dissimilar women.

Although the book is not full of lots of action and adventure scenes, Bobby and Emma did give readers an exciting, suspenseful, "who would have though you were the bad guy" ending.   And Bobby had his showdown with Raymond -- in an even more surprising manner.

In summary, Off Limits held all the requisite criteria for being a great read.   {1} Bobby Halloran, a gorgeous Cajun charmer, who was suffering from burnout and was about to cross the thin blue line.   {2} Emma Frey, a self-confident, straight-laced, rule-following fellow detective who was forced to work with Bobby.   {3} Rather than procedural action and adventure, some interesting day-to-day activities moved the story line along at a slow, but steady pace.   {4} A tad bit of suspense was thrown in to increase interest.   {5} The undeniable attraction between two such polar opposites added a rich romantic flavor to the book.   {6} It was easy to sympathize, cry, and laugh with Bobby and Emma.   {7} Wickedly spicy lovemaking added the necessary heat.   {8} And, finally, a couple of interesting secondary characters were thrown in for good measure.

Yes, there were a few times when it was easy to put this book down, but it is still an enjoyable read.   Since Albert's writing style holds a strong appeal for me, I am looking forward to reading the next installment of The Pre-Avalon Series.

"Off Limits" Quotations
66Why couldn't she ever come up with clever, ego-shriveling comebacks until hours after the fact?   (Emma)
74"I've never been comfortable in social situations with people I don't know.   It's exhausting, smiling and talking, trying to act casual."   (Emma)
79Emma had no idea how he did that, but if he could patent it, he'd make a fortune.   Nor would she mind if a little of his magic at putting people at ease rubbed off on her, even though she long since accepted that she was simply one of those quiet, introspective types . . .   (Emma)
188"I gave up worrying a long time ago about what other people think of me.   I suggest you do the same before it makes you crazy."   (Bobby)
268Such as wishing to be loved for who they were, wanting people to see their good qualities, even if they were always the quiet ones in the corner who weren't flashy or vibrant.   (Emma)
322At some point, everyone felt overlooked, misunderstood, or unable to measure up to expectations.   (Emma)
323"I don't get angry with people who don't understand me.   I tell myself that, deep down, they're really just like me: They get up every morning to go to work, still holding out for that one somebody who'll walk into their lives and see them the way nobody else can."   (Chloe)
