In the process of reading Maya Banks's books in The Kelly Group International "KGI" Series back-to-back, finally encountered a book that was totally enjoyable, exciting, and a one-sitting read. Echoes At Dawn, the fifth book in the series, was full of romance and sensuality, had some great adventurous action scenes, included some clever twists, and had the reader intrigued, wondering what was going to happen next. What it did not include, however, was a lot of interaction featuring the Kelly brothers, who owned and operated KGI.
As in the previous books, Banks continued to write this story in such a manner that readers had to depend on other sources to understand all the nuances, names, and familial relationships that run through this story. Therefore, it is recommended that one read this series of books in order. It is particularly important that one read book four, Whispers In The Dark, before reading Echoes At Dawn as these two books are uniquely entwined.
These two books, basically, overlap in that Banks decided to give the heroines featured in these two books special telepathic abilities. Banks left several threads dangling at the end of Whispers In The Dark. Readers closed the book wondering {1} what agency and/or person was hunting the telepathic Peterson sisters, and {2} what happened to Grace Peterson, who suddenly stopped communicating with her sister, Shea, in the middle of the book.
Grace Peterson is the heroine of Echoes At Dawn and Banks opens chapter one telling readers that Grace had, indeed, been captured and was being treated as a lab rat to test her skills of being able {1} to communicate telepathically and {2} to heal people. What she doesn't tell us is where exactly Grace was being held (besides somewhere in the mountains of Colorado) and who initiated the explosion to the facility where Grace was a captive that allowed her to escape in the confusion. Since Banks is quite talented at leaving these kinds of dangling threads in her stories, readers must just accept that Banks is sometimes going to go with vague to move her characters around the board to where they need to be.
Gordon Farnsworth, the man behind Grace's capture, is introduced in the prologue of the story. Banks began painting a picture of this shady man and why he was desperate to have Grace under this control.
Gordon Farnsworth had more money than God. He had connections beyond anyone's imagining. He'd lived his life on the fringe, steeped in shadows, so immersed in gray that he doubted he had any semblance of a soul remaining. But Banks left more dangling threads as the story continued to progress. For instance, if Farnsworth was so determined to test Grace to see if she could heal his dying daughter, why didn't his scientists care more about her well-being? It felt like the scientists didn't seem to care if they killed Grace during their testing process. If Grace died during the testing, she could not heal little Elizabeth Farnsworth.
He had power, wealth and information at his disposal. And none of it meant a damn thing because his daughter was dying and he was powerless to prevent it. (Gordon Farnsworth, page 1)
Another tool that Banks utilized with great skill was to quickly immerse the reader into the story by opening the book with a tense, exciting, emotional action scene featuring the hero and heroine. While Grace hides from her captors, alone, cold, in pain and ready to choose death rather than return to captivity, Rio and his team are on the same mountain searching for Grace as well. After weeks of searching, Rio's gut told him that he was close to Grace. Banks also let readers know that she was going to give Rio and Grace that special ability to communicate telepathically (like Nathan and Shea did all the way through Whispers In The Dark).
Where are you, Grace? I know you're here. I can feel you.Now this is the kind of daring action scene that should be present in a Military Romantic Suspense book that features a well-built military man wearing camo pants and carrying a big gun on the front cover. It was exciting to watch Rio and his team find Grace just as her captors arrived on the scene. Banks shows readers the skills that Rio, Terrence, Diego, Decker, Browning, and Alton possess as they not only take out the bad guys, but have to rescue Grace from the ledge upon which she landed when she fell over the cliff. Then they have to trek off the mountain in the middle of the night, trying to avoid the men combing the mountains trying to re-capture Grace.
And it was true. There was a distinct prickle, the same awareness he'd experienced the first time he'd seen her on the surveillance footage. The last time anyone had seen her before she disappeared. (Rio, page 9)
He knew then that he heard Grace's innermost thoughts. He was feeling what she felt. And her sorrow was so great that it staggered him. (Rio, page 13)
And Banks increases the suspenseful aspect of the story by popping a new character and entity into the book. Just as Grace, Rio and his team reach a vehicle to flee the mountains, Hancock steps out of the shadows and greets his former teammate, Rio. And readers are wondering who is Hancock and what is Titan, the agency Farnsworth contacted to retrieve his lost commodity? Especially, when Hancock tells Rio that he is going to let him take Grace from the mountain to pay back a debt.
"I'm repaying a debt. You get a free pass. This time. My job is to bring Grace Peterson in regardless of how. My team is at least two miles away. They'll stay there until you've had time to move out."Banks did something so right with Rio in this story -- something that she failed to do with all the Kelly brothers in the previous books of the series. She gave him a background story -- a relatively detailed background story. He came to life. He was a multi-dimensional character. Mind you, Banks continued to be slightly stingy when it came to giving readers details about Rio's physical attributes, but she went into great detail about Rio's history and thought processes regarding his past.
"Next time? All bets are off. I'll bring her in even if I have to go through you." (Hancock, page 52)
The reason Rio knew Grace was in grave danger was because he had once been a member of Titan and he knew how this exceptional Black Ops group operated. They never failed to complete their missions. By the end of the book, Banks had given readers so many details about this supposedly non-existent governmental entity, that it was impossible not to wonder why she hadn't done the same thing when she introduced us to KGI, Kelly Group International, the super-elite, top secret, family-run business which "employed" Rio and his team.
Rio knew the best thing, the right thing, was to report back to his boss. If he had such a thing. True, he worked for KGI. His men technically worked for KGI. But Rio was his own man and his men were loyal to him. They went where he went. Followed his orders. (Rio, page 26)Just as in the previous books of the series, Banks continues to gloss over details about KGI, the entity that takes center stage in this series. The only reason we know the name assigned to KGI is because it is detailed on the back cover of the book. Banks does manage, however, to compare them favorably to Titan.
"And KGI is better?"
"Different," Rio said. "We decide what missions to take. We decide what side we line up on. The Kelly's . . . they're righteous. Upstanding. They have integrity and principles. It's why I work for them. It's why my team works for them." (Rio and Grace, page 96)
But the other thing you need to know is that KGI doesn't lose. There is not another group of men who have more heart, determination and courage. Anywhere. We fight because we believe in what we do. Titan fights because it's what they're paid to do." (Rio, page 147)
Rio takes Grace back to his custom-built fortress in Belize. (This is the same house that Garrett and Sarah inappropriately took over in Hidden Away.) The way that Rio, Terrence, Diego, Decker, Browning, and Alton act when they reach Rio's home in Belize is much more believable than the way they acted in Hidden Away. Rio and his men act like they're at home. They relax and throw around the male camaraderie banter that Banks likes to feature in her books.
So then the question arises. If Rio and his men had to constantly patrol the woods when Garrett and Sarah were safe in the house, why didn't they have to do so in Echoes At Dawn? This is just another inconsistency that seems to find its way into this series of books. (Of course, it is easy to image that Rio and his men were just staying out of the way for Garrett and Sarah to get it on, but, again, that just emphasizes the fact that Garrett and Sarah totally disregarded Rio's place in his own home.)
Rio took Grace to his home to heal mentally as well as physically. Banks did a great job of taking this totally alpha, macho man and giving him a soft side. Rio is comfortable cooking and it is obvious that he takes pride in his home. The story slowed down drastically so the romance and sensuality between Rio and Grace could be featured. Banks wrote some beautiful passages that revealed the relationship building between Rio and Grace.
"And don't you dare cry on me either," he warned. "A woman who's survived all you've survived doesn't cry. She holds her head up and dares the world around her to [screw] with her." (Rio, page 79)As expected, Rio and Grace make love in the hot, spicy, graphic way that Banks favors. And in a surprise change from the norm, since Grace is a virgin, Rio explains to Grace and readers just exactly how a man wants his woman to give him pleasure with her mouth. (Quite an impressive instruction manual!)
What she wanted to do most was to lean back into his arms and wallow in the warmth and comfort of his embrace. She was starved for touch. Affection. Human contact that wasn't forced on her. (Grace, page 80)
His chest kind of caved in at the vulnerability in her voice. Already, whether she realized it or acknowledged it, there was a thread of trust between them. She felt safe with him. It was a start. (Rio, page 82)
No longer was she content sitting there still, an inactive participant. She wanted to touch him. She wanted to taste him. She wanted to absorb him into her senses until he was all she could see, smell or feel. (Grace, page 132)
"I'm going to make love to you, Grace. Not right this minute. I'm not going to pressure you or rush this. But from the moment I saw you on that video surveillance tape, you were mine. I have no explanation for it. I don't even entirely understand the connection. But it's there, and I think you feel it too. I'm willing to wait until the moment is right, but you're mine." (Rio, page 133)
Rio's smile was gentle but assured. "There's nothing at all to say, Grace. Your mine. You've been mine from the beginning. You never stood a chance once I decided that I was going to be the man who brought you home." (Rio, page 134)
It was simply too much. How he could reach inside her and see what it was she needed the most? Someone to believe in her. Someone who wasn't trying to use her. Someone who thought she was special, not because of her powers, but because . . . because she was simply Grace Peterson. (Grace, page 137)
"Your mine." He repeated again. "Were going to get there, Grace. Where 'there' is, I'm not altogether sure yet, but were going to get there together." (Rio, page 138)
His mouth took hers. It was no gentle inquiry. It was a stamp of possession. It was a promise of what was to come. (Grace, page 148)
"I don't expect you to understand it. Hell, I don't understand it myself. But I do expect you to accept it. And me. Because, honey, whether you realize it or not, I'm going to be a steady presence in your life from now on. It's just a matter of how and where I fit in when all of this is over with, but I'm telling you right now, I'm not going away." (Rio, page 175)
"I see a man who's honorable. Who gave his everything to a cause he believed in. I see a man who, upon realizing that the path he'd chosen was no longer in keeping with the principles he held close, walked away and re-created himself in a role as protector, savior, leader and, yes, hero. You may not like the label, Rio, but you are a hero. You're my hero. You're my savior and protector." (Grace, page 223)
Even though it was impossible to believe that someone like Grace existed, Banks did a much better job of making a connection between the heroine and the reader than in the previous books of the series. Grace is introduced at the lowest point in her life, contemplating death rather than enduring constant captivity and pain. Grace grows into her strength as Rio and his team build her up.
"I don't know how the hell she survived," Diego said as he rose. "She's a walking corpse." (Diego, page 47)Probably two of the best scenes in the book featuring Grace were the ones in which she took charge and stood up to the two men who thought they held the upper hand and turned a 'no way out' situation into one that held possibilities. The first was Grace's confrontation with Hancock and the second was Graces's confrontation with Gordon Farnsworth.
"You're an amazing woman, Grace. I'll never know how you made it out of those mountains in the condition you were in, but I'm damn proud of you for doing it." (Diego, page 86)
"You'll get there, Grace. You're already making such improvement. You bear no resemblance to the defeated, broken woman who begged me to let her die just a few days ago. You walked out of those damn mountains under your own power with a broken arm, broken ribs and unimaginable mental and physical strain. I've served with men who couldn't have done what you did, so cut yourself some slack." (Rio, page 145-146)
"Here's the deal, Hancock," she said in just as arrogant a voice as he'd used moments earlier. "You're going to let every last person go until it's just you and me."= = = =
"And if I don't?"
There was more curiosity in his voice than any real threat. It was apparent that he had been caught off guard by her approach. Maybe he expected her to be crying or screaming or cowering behind Terrence and Diego.
"If you don't, then I'll shoot myself and you have yourself one [screwed]-up mission."
Rio's roar of denial echoed and mixed with all the other shouts and exclamations of surprise.
Hancock smiled. "You're bluffing, and you're insane. No one here believes you. I hold all the cards, Grace. You hold nothing."
Her stare grew colder. She stared until he actually flinched and glanced away for the briefest of moments. (Grace and Hancock, page 238)
"You can't do anything to me that hasn't already been done. It's not possible to endure more than I've already endured. While your conceit and arrogance tell you that you are all mighty and powerful, just remember that your daughter could be dead in the next hour or the next day. And then you stand there like a pompous jackass and presume to call my ethics into question. Do you think I give a shit what you think of me, you worthless, dirt-eating worm?" (Grace, page 263)But there was one thing about Grace that didn't ring true. Grace was raised by very protective parents, Brandon and Andrea Peterson, who did not allow her a great deal of interaction with other people. She was also described at being so incredibly compassionate and sweet-natured that her gift was dangerous because she wanted to heal everyone. So how does a woman, who wasn't raised around a bunch of military men who sling the f-word around like candy flying from a pinata, use it so casually? It jarred when Grace dropped the f-bomb. Banks obviously likes to use the f-word with regularity and it comes across realistically when uttered by the men of KGI, but why must she also use it as the expletive of choice for the heroines of her books?
Terrence, Rio's second in command, has been walking around in the background of several of the books in this series and has inspired some interest. Banks, finally, gave Terrence some definition in this book. But, in her typical manner, Banks left out interesting factors about Terrence like his hair color, his eye color, and his face definition, to go along with the description of a big mountain of a man. Banks also very cleverly spelled out to readers that underneath the skin of this giant of a military man, beat the heart of a compassionate man when he picked up little Elizabeth Farnsworth.
However, Banks failed to give readers a picture of the other members of Rio's team. For some reason, it seems that Diego, Decker, Browning, and Alton, who appear regularly in this series, should be defined so that they are visible entities. Since they continue to lay their lives on the line for KGI, they should get more definition than just having their names scrolled across the pages. (The same can be said for the three members of Steele's team, Baker, Dolphin, and Renshaw.)
P.J. Rutherford and [David] "Cole" [Coletrane] (who are to be featured in book six, Shades of Gray) were given a bit of page time as they were called on to take out Hancock's snipers.
"Got one," P.J. called. "Mother------ is ball-less and singing soprano."Sam and Nathan Kelly were the only two Kelly brothers given a bit of page time and interaction between Rio and his team during the telling of this story so those readers who enjoy all the Kelly family interactions will be greatly disappointed. However, all the members of the Kelly family were trotted out in the last chapter of the book to be introduced to Grace when she arrived at the Kelly Compound for Nathan and Shea's and Garrett and Sarah's double wedding.
"Jesus, that woman is vicious," Joe muttered.
"That's our girl," Renshaw called back smugly.
. . .
"Two down,"Cole called from his position in the far corner. He had settled beside a small hole in the metal building and had the barrel of his rifle inserted through the opening. There was just enough room for his scope without having his vision obscured.
"Like hell, you're outdoing me," P.J. muttered. "Number three down. Ah hell, there's four. Seven o'clock, Cole, moving out fast. Nail his ass." Cole fired and then held up four fingers to signal his man was down. (page 244)
Adam Resnick was given a small point of view voice in the book as he tries to find a way to get the people searching for Grace and Shea to back off. To be quite honest, all the intricacies involving the government's research that resulted in the birth of Adam, Grace, and Shea is still a bit confusing. One is left to wonder whether Banks is going to continue to let Adam Resnick (and the young Marine commander, Kyle Phillips) continue to show up in future books of this series. After all, these two characters have been given more definition that the extraneous 'name-only' members of Steele's and Rio's KGI teams.
One other thing in the book didn't make sense. Banks spent a lot of time detailing how the men who were members of Titan were the best of the best, that failure was not an option. So if these men are so top notch, how in the world could one of them accidentally (if you will) shoot Rio. Yes, Banks was trying to make the ending that much more exciting, but this part of the action just didn't ring true. And to be quite honest, was it even necessary to take the action this far?
Echoes At Dawn, the fifth book in The Kelly Group International "KGI" Series, is the most enjoyable book in the series, so far. Maya Banks entertained readers with a story that was difficult to put down. The story included: {1} Eduardo Bezerra, known to everyone as Rio, a hunky, tough, handsome, hero, who revealed the tender side of his personality; {2} Grace Peterson, a gorgeous, compassionate, strong-willed, determined heroine, who was given the gift of telepathy and the ability to heal another; {3} some very exciting, entertaining, top-notch action scenes that moved the story along at a quick pace; {4} a minimal degree of emotional connection to the characters to bring forth laughter and some throat-tightening moments; {5} a great deal of romance with some beautifully written words of love from Rio and Grace; {6} some detailed, passionate, hot, spicy, and emotional love scenes; {7} although not very edgy, a degree of suspense kept the reader turning the pages; {8} the inclusion of some new secondary characters that drew great interest: {a} Gordon Farnsworth, {b} Elizabeth Farnsworth, and {c} Hancock; {9} the inclusion of previously-introduced secondary characters that added to the story: {a} Terrence, {b} Mitch Browning, {c} Diego, {d} Decker, {e} Alton, {f} Sam Kelly, {g} Nathan Kelly, and {f} Adam Resnick; {10} cameo appearances of: {a} Garrett Kelly, {b} Donovan Kelly, {c} Joe Kelly, {d} Swanny, {e} Steele, {f} P.J. Rutherford, {g} [David] "Cole" [Coltrane], and {h} Kyle Phillips. Echoes At Dawn is a wonderful addition to this series.

48 | "I can make a bed in the back," Browning offered. "It won't be the Ritz, but it'll do." "How the ---- would you know anything about the Ritz?" Alton grumbled. "----ing pretty boy." Browning snorted. "You got me mixed up with Diego here. He's Mr. Sauve and shit." (Alton and Browning) |
79 | "And don't you dare cry on me either," he warned. "A woman who's survived all you've survived doesn't cry. She holds her head up and dares the world around her to [screw] with her." (Rio) |
80 | What she wanted to do most was to lean back into his arms and wallow in the warmth and comfort of his embrace. She was starved for touch. Affection. Human contact that wasn't forced on her. (Grace) |
82 | His chest kind of caved in at the vulnerability in her voice. Already, whether she realized it or acknowledged it, there was a thread of trust between them. She felt safe with him. It was a start. (Rio) |
96 | "There's no shame in admitting you were at your lowest point. We've all been there." (Rio) |
97 | "Any man who abuses those who are weaker and defenseless deserves to have his balls cut off." (Grace) |
97 | "It's the most helpless feeling in the world not to be able to fight back." (Grace) |
99 | "Would you . . ." She trailed off like she was having difficulty asking what it was she wanted. "Would you sleep with me? On the bed, I mean? I feel . . . safer . . . when you're near." (Grace) |
128 | "I do understand mind over matter. I understand that to be strong, your mind has to be strong and focused. It has to heal just like your body had to heal. The mind is a very peculiar thing. Your brain has a way of protecting itself and you from complete devastation. You were at your limit, so it shut down as a protective measure. Now you just have to give it time to heal and for those pathways to your sister to reopen." (Rio) |
128 | "the strongest warrior knows that his body is only as strong as his mind. A physically weaker person can defeat a much stronger opponent if he stronger mentally." (Rio) |
132 | No longer was she content sitting there still, an inactive participant. She wanted to touch him. She wanted to taste him. She wanted to absorb him into her senses until he was all she could see, smell or feel. (Grace) |
133 | "I'm going to make love to you, Grace. Not right this minute. I'm not going to pressure you or rush this. But from the moment I saw you on that video surveillance tape, you were mine. I have no explanation for it. I don't even entirely understand the connection. But it's there, and I think you feel it too. I'm willing to wait until the moment is right, but you're mine." (Rio) |
134 | Rio's smile was gentle but assured. "There's nothing at all to say, Grace. Your mine. You've been mine from the beginning. You never stood a chance once I decided that I was going to be the man who brought you home." (Rio) |
137 | It was simply too much. How he could reach inside her and see what it was she needed the most? Someone to believe in her. Someone who was trying to use her. Someone who thought she was special, not because of her powers, but because . . . because she was simply Grace Peterson. (Grace) |
138 | "Your mine." He repeated again. "Were going to get there, Grace. Where 'there' is, I'm not altogether sure yet, but were going to get there together." (Rio) |
141 | The team reminded her of a well-oiled machine. Smooth. Seamless. Almost if they could read one another's minds. (Grace) |
147 | "I think you're pretty damn special yourself." (Grace) |
148 | His mouth took hers. It was no gentle inquiry. It was a stamp of possession. It was a promise of what was to come. (Grace) |
175 | "I don't expect you to understand it. Hell, I don't understand it myself. But I do expect you to accept it. And me. Because, honey, whether you realize it or not, I'm going to be a steady presence in your life from now on. It's just a matter of how and where I fit in all of this is over with, but I'm telling you right now, I'm not going away." (Rio) |
223 | "I see a man who's honorable. Who gave his everything to a cause he believed in. I see a man who, upon realizing that the path you chosen was no longer in keeping with the principles he held close, walked away and re-created himself in a role as protector, savior, leader and, yes, hero. You may not like the label, Rio, but you are a hero. You're my hero. You're my savior and protector." (Grace) |
224 | "We all make mistakes, Rio. The mark of a man is how he makes up for those mistakes, and you've more than paid your penance." (Grace) |
236 | "I've survived before. I'll do it again. Besides, I have a hell of a lot more to live for now. If you think I'm giving up and rolling over, you have another think coming. I'm going, but I damn well expect you guys to get your asses in gear and come save my ass before it gets too bad. All I'm doing is buying us some time." (Grace) |
263 | "You can't do anything to me that hasn't already been done. It's not possible to endure more than I've already endured. While your conceit and arrogance tell you that you are all mighty and powerful, just remember that your daughter could be dead in the next hour or the next day. And then you stand there like a pompous jackass and presume to call my ethics into question. Do you think I give a shit what you think of me, you worthless, dirt-eating worm?" (Grace) |
290 | "What we did and do isn't always on the straight and narrow, but they are necessary things and they are for the greater good. The day I stop believing that is the day I die because I don't want to live in a world where I believe that good has no place in it any longer." (Hancock) |
